The Open this year is being held in San
Francisco at the Olympic Club, Lake Course. The Olympic Club is the
oldest athletic club in the United States. The Club has over 5,000
active members in over 19 sports. The Club hosted its first Open in
1955. The same year that Jack Fleck, who was the underdog, beat Ben
Hogan who was the favorite. The next Open at Lakeside was in 1966 when
Arnold Palmer dominated by 7 strokes but lost to Billy Palmer when they
tied and he won in Playoff. In 1987 there was no need for a playoff as
Scott Simpson beat the favorite, Tom Watson. The last Open that was held
at Lakeside was in 1998 when Janzen equaled par.
